How to Master your Metabolism

Have you ever felt like you were just cursed with a slow metabolism? Or maybe even wondered if it was broken because you can’t seem to lose weight no matter what you do. The good news is, it’s not broken! However, it may be a bit sluggish.

In this blog we’re going to talk about why your metabolism may have slowed down and what you can do to repair it.

First, let’s start with a definition so we’re all on the same page. What is metabolism?

Metabolism is “the chemical processes that occur in a living organism in order to maintain life”. It is how our body takes food, turns it into energy and keeps everything running in order to keep us alive, which means it determines how much energy (aka calories) we burn. Our metabolism plays a big part in determining how your body will either hold onto weight or let it go when we make diet and lifestyle changes.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) our body is GREAT at sending us signals or warning lights if something is off. We just have to be willing to listen to it and give it what it needs.

The thing is, that if fat loss is a goal of yours, supporting your metabolism may need to be your first step.

If you are struggling with…

  1. Not being able to lose weight, no matter how strict you are with your diet

  2. Feeling wired but tired, especially when you’re trying to go to sleep

  3. Being tired all the time (and any form of caffeine is your best friend)

  4. You’re cold all the time

  5. You’re never hungry in the morning

  6. PMS and you feel like a totally different person before your period or Ibuprofen becomes your new best friend

  7. Feeling like you puff up if you eat anything “off track”

  8. Losing hair or your nails being super brittle

  9. Gut issues like constipation or bloat, no matter how many foods you cut out…

…Then your check engine light is on and your metabolism is sending you warning signs that something is up and it needs a little love!

Why does this happen? How do our metabolisms become “sluggish”?

While there are many factors that influence our metabolic health the main things I see contributing are:

  • Yo-yo dieting and weight fluctuations

  • Underfueling (yes, I mean not eating enough) & over exercising

  • Or on the opposite side of the spectrum a sedentary lifestyle

  • Nutrient deficiencies (from those years of dieting or just imbalanced diet)

  • Stress, both physical and mental impacts how your body functions internally

Hopefully you can see by now, your metabolism impacts A LOT, and can have a big impact on your overall health, not just weight. And is much more complex than “do this juice cleanse for 10 days to boost your metabolism”. AND if fat loss is also a goal of yours, supporting your metabolism may need to be your first step.

After years of my own healing journey and working with clients who couldn’t seem to find a diet that worked for them, I realized that so many of us were struggling with sluggish metabolisms, and I knew that was the first step to improving health.

Which is why I created my Master your Metabolism Group program.

The things we cover in this program are the steps I personally walked through (and continue to work on) and what I walk my 1:1 clients through to get them to their goals. This is a 10-week program that is not only info packed but provides the support and accountability you need to implement all the the topics discussed.

So let’s walk through these steps to a healthier metabolism that we go to in depth in the Master Your Metabolism program:

Mastering your Mindset

  • While you might be thinking, “what does this have to do with my metabolism?” I promise you there is a reason we start with this one. Because your mindset directly impacts your thoughts which has a downstream impact on your behaviors and actions. Which is why to get the most out of the program you need to address your limiting beliefs, get clear on your goals and set yourself up for success.

Balance your blood sugar

  • Yes, even someone without diabetes needs to balance their blood sugar. In this module we go way beyond just “cut carbs” and actually talk about how you can (and should) still enjoy your favorite carbs while still supporting your blood sugar. The changes we talk about can easily be implemented AND get you some quick wins like more energy and less cravings.

Navigating life

  • So many diets give you a plan for 30 days, but what happens on day 31? I have no doubt you can stick to a plan for 7, 10 or even 30 days but the goal is not to be on a diet for the rest of your life. The goal is to be able to confidently navigate all of life’s twists and turns while still fueling your body in a way that makes you feel good!  It is possible for you to finally break the cycle of going all out on the weekend only to be riddled with guilt and bloat to have to start over every Monday. Instead, you can enjoy the weekend’s activities free of guilt and shame while still having energy and no bloat to seamlessly start your week again on Monday without the Sunday diet scaries.

Mindful movement

  • We all know by now that exercise is beneficial for us, but what type and how much to support your metabolism may surprise you. Learning how to listen to your body and give it what it needs has become an art form, but my goal is for you to not only know how to listen to your body to meet your nutrition needs, but also be mindful of what kind of movement your body is needing.

Sleep, Stress & Gut health

  • While these all get their own week they’re all connected. Your sleep impacts your stress, stress impacts your gut health and your gut health literally impacts everything. And you may already know how important addressing these three things are, but understanding the direct connection between them and your metabolism has been powerful for my MYM members. Because believe me, even though these three are talked about a lot more now I still see them often neglected in practice.

Mindful eating

  • While intuitive eating is very popular right now (which I honestly think is great), I have a slightly different approach with it. The ultimate goal is to get to a place of being able to trust your body and eat (and move) intuitively, but ultimately I see that hormone imbalances and poor metabolic health make this quite challenging. That is why we talk about the practice of mindful eating after establishing the foundations that will help you bring back healthy hunger and fullness cues.

Momentum

  • Unlike those other 30 day plans I mentioned above, I make sure you have a plan to move forward after the program ends. Which is why I have dedicated a whole module to the what ifs, ands and buts to help you build a game plan to continue supporting your metabolism and reaching your fat loss and health goals!

BONUS:

For Black Friday I am also including an HTMA (Hair Test for Mineral Analysis) to help you better understand YOUR individual needs. Uncover where your body is needing more support to get you to your health goals even quicker! This test can tell us if you’re lacking minerals that are necessary for a healthy thyroid (the conductor to your metabolism), for stable blood sugar, for a healthy gut and more!

If you have any questions about this test or the Master Your Metabolism Group Program, feel free to reach out via the form below!
